What is breast enlargement?

Breast enlargement, also known as a boob job or breast augmentation, is a procedure to give you bigger and fuller breasts. It can help improve your breast shape and symmetry if your breasts are a different size or shape. Research shows that breast enlargement can increases your body confidence and self-esteem.

What does breast enlargement involve?

Breast enlargement involves making a cut under your breast, making a space either under or over the muscle and placing a silicone breast implants to make your breasts bigger and fuller. The procedure is done with you asleep, takes about an hour and you can go home the same day. Most of our clients take a week off work and are back to all their activities (like the gym) in a month or so. There are a number of different techniques for breast enlargement and we will help you choose the best solution to achieve the results you want.

Key issues in breast enlargement:

Your scar

Most women choose a scar that is hidden under their breast in the inframammary fold (IMF). These tend to heal well and leave a well hidden fine-line scar. But there are alternatives, such as under the nipple or even in the armpit. We will discuss all these options so you can choose.

Your implants

At Perfecta we believe the quality of your breast implants is very important. We only use the best quality breast implants from Mentor. You choose the size, you choose the shape and you choose the surface texture. We have never used PIP or Allergan implants at Perfecta.

How big shall I go?

The size you choose is very personal. You choose the size you want to be. We use a breast implant sizing system with you in clinic to help show you how you will look with various sizes. We will also tell you how you do this at home. We repeat this process at your second appointment so you have plenty of time to make the right decision for you.

Round or shaped implants?

You have the choice of round or shaped (teardrop) implants. Your choice depends on your breast size and shape and the result you want to achieve. Round implants are great if you want a rounder fuller cleavage. Shaped implants work best when you want a more natural look and particularly after children and breast-feeding. We will discuss this with you I clinic and help you choose the best shape for you.

Smooth or textured surface implants?

Implants can have a smooth or textured surface. For the last 20 years textured implants have largely replaced smooth implants because they have a lower rate of capsular contracture. However recently a certain type of surface texture has been implicated in causing breast-implant associated anapaestic large cell lymphoma. For this reason, some patients are choosing smooth surface implants. Again we will discuss this with you in more detail in clinic.

Under or over the muscle?

The choice of where your implants go depends largely on your body shape and breast size and shape. Implants can go under your pectoralis major muscle (submuscular or subpectoral), over the muscle but under the breast tissue (subglandular), or under the pectoral fascia (subfascial). There are advantages and disadvantages of each and we will discuss this with you in clinic and help you choose the best position for your implants.

Before treatment

First appointment

At Perfecta your care is led by your Consultant Plastic Surgeon and you will see them at least twice before your breast enlargement. Your first appointment with your surgeon a lasts round half an hour and includes specialist assessment. Then we will discuss how we can help you achieve the result you want. We will go through your options for treatment and then discuss the procedure with you so you understand what is involved and answer any questions you may have. We use a breast implant sizing system so you can choose your implant size.

After your first appointment we will send you los of information about your treatment options and provide you with a fixed cost for your package of care. We will then give you time and space to decide what you would like to do. When you are ready our office team will help you book a date for your procedure and arrange a second appointment with your surgeon.

Second appointment

Your second appointment gives you the chance to meet your surgeon again and discuss your procedure in more detail. We will go through all the important information about breast enlargement to help you make the right choices for the result you want to achieve, including the site of incision (and subsequent scar) and the size, shape, surface texture and position of the implants. We will use the breast implant sizing system once again to help you choose the right implant size. We will discuss your hospital care, anaesthetic and recovery and your aftercare plan. We will also discuss the potential risks and complications of surgery, so you are fully informed.

Pre-assessment appointment

A few weeks before your procedure you will have an appointment with our nurses for a pre-operative medical. Our nurses will also tell you everything you need to know for the day of your procedure, such as what time to stop eating and drinking, what time to come in to the hospital, and what to bring with you. If you have any questions about these details or anything else then please ask your nurse or feel free to email or call us.

Do your research

Read up on your treatment options before your appointment. Good sources of information are our website and the BAPRAS website (www.bapras.co.uk) and BAAPS website (www.baaps.co.uk). It can be helpful to read blogs written by people who have had your procedure. But bear in mind they only have experience of their own journey. Your expert Consultant Plastic Surgeon and our experienced nurses have looked after hundreds of patients and have an unrivalled level of knowledge and understanding to help you. Ask us anything you want to know.

Come with a friend

It is a good idea to come to your appointment with someone – your partner, your mum, your best friend – you choose. But don’t worry if you do come on your own, we always have a nurse chaperone to keep you company.

Write down a list of questions

In the week before your appointment make a note of any questions you want to ask. We will give you lots of useful information during your appointment. Afterwards we will email you with written information to help you make the right decision and make sure you are fully informed. Don’t worry if you forget what you wanted to ask. We will be seeing you for a second appointment or you can email us at any time.

Can I see photos of your work?

Yes of course. We will show you lots of photographs of our patients who have had breast enlargement to show the type of improvement we can achieve. Following your first consultation you will receive a comprehensive information pack to help you decide if breast enlargement is right for you and to help you decide the size and shape of your implants.

Take some ‘before’ selfies

You might like to take some photos before your procedure to remind you how you used to look! We will also do this on the day of your procedure for your medical records.

Can I get finance?

The private hospitals we work with offer finance for your procedure. Please ask for further details at your consultation or click here for more information.

On the day of your procedure

Things to bring

Bring your phone and charger and a book or magazine. There is always a lot of waiting around in hospital so bring things to keep you amused. There is a TV in your private room and your partner, family member or friend can stay with you the whole time. Bring you dressing gown and slippers and you can stay comfortable in your favourite things whilst you wait.

Will I see my Consultant Plastic Surgeon on the day?

When you arrive at the hospital you will be shown to your private room and your nurse will get you ready for your procedure. At Perfecta your care is led by your Consultant Plastic Surgeon and you will see them again on the day of your procedure to go through some final paperwork, including the hospital consent form, take photographs for your medical records and do your pre-operative markings. Then you are ready to go.

Who will give my anaesthetic?

We only work with experienced Consultant Anaesthetists, most of whom are also NHS Consultant Anaesthetists. You will have the opportunity to meet your Consultant Anaesthetist on the day as well. They will complete your pre-operative assessment to make sure you are safe and ready to go ahead. They will talk you through the anaesthetic and your recovery. General anaesthetic (asleep) can make people feel sick and surgery can be painful. We take great care to make your procedure as smooth as possible and do lots of things to help you wake up without feeling sore or sick.

Your package of care

All of your after-care is provided as part of your package of care, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. When you are ready to go home, the nurses will give you an appointment for your first check up a week later. You will see your Consultant Plastic Surgeon 3 months after surgery and again after 12 months. If you have any problems in between appointments then don’t worry, just give us a call, speak to the nurses and come back to see us.

What will my breasts look like when I wake up?

After you procedure your breast will look bigger and fuller. Early on your breasts may look quite full and high. Slowly over the next few months the fullness in your upper breast goes down and the lower breast fills out (‘fluffing’). Be prepared to wait up to 12 months for them to settle fully.

When can I go home?

Most clients go home the same day, once you feel ready. Some choose to stay overnight and go home the next day – you choose.

Dressings, tapes and massage

We use showerproof tape dressings after your breast surgery. Continue with the tape for four weeks. After four weeks remove the tape and massage the scar every day with Bio-oil (which you can find at Superdrug and supermarkets). Massage your breasts in the shower with shampoo or shower gel. This is a great way of getting to know the feel of your new breasts and of helping them settle down more quickly.

Can I shower after my procedure?

Yes – you can shower from day one. We encourage you to shower and wash your hair every day after surgery. The dressings we use are showerproof and are designed to get wet. After showering simply dab your dressings dry with a towel before putting your bra back on.

What sort of bra should I wear?

Wear a lycra-rich sports bra 24/7 (all the time you are not in the shower) for the first 3 months – the front zip ones are the best. Buy one for your second ‘sizing’ consultation and then use that afterwards. Wait around 3 months before buying new nice bras to allow your post-op swelling to settle.

When can I return to normal activities and work?

Please gently return to all your normal activities straight after your procedure. Washing your hair is great physiotherapy for your arms and shoulders after breast surgery. Most of our clients are back to most things (including work) a week after breast enlargement and are back to everything (Including the gym and exercise classes) in a month. If you enjoy the gym then you might want to go easy on pectoral exercises in the future, particularly if your implants go under the muscle. You can drive as soon as you feel safe and able to do so. Most of our clients after breast enlargement drive themselves back to their appointment one week after surgery.

When can I go on holiday?

This is a common question in clinic, particularly leading up to the summer. You could travel the following day if you need to. However it would be sensible to wait a couple of weeks. Most patients settle well and without any problems after breast enlargement. However if you do have any issues then it is nice to be able to pop in and see us.

Sun protection and skin conditioning

Your chest will be more sensitive in the sun for a while after breast enlargement. Look after yourself in the sun, particularly in the first six months after your procedure. Factor 50 suncream and lots of moisturising cream (or Bio-oil) are helpful.

What our patients say about Perfecta Cosmetic Surgery

“Best decision ever – wish I’d done it years ago”

“I’ve wanted a breast enlargement for many years. Had my consultation 2018 with the procedure being done Jan 19. I’m over the moon with the result. Mr Dunkin & team we’re amazing, massive thank you. I felt so at ease & after my consultations couldn’t wait to have the op. All went to plan & the result is even better than I could of ever imagined.”

“Better than I ever expected”

“My breast implant journey was better than I ever expected, the surgeon was amazing and the hospital staff were so lovely”

“Wanted to have implants for years and finally took the plunge and love them”!!!

“I met my surgeon Dr Chris Dunkin and booked surgery for the 10th January 2019, the whole process was better than I ever expected, the surgeon was amazing and the hospital staff were so lovely as well. The recovery wasn’t as bad as I thought and I healed really well!  I chose 450cc round Mentor implants which went under the muscle. I was a 32B/deflated C before and now I am a 30F/32E”

“Amazing experience, perfect outcome”

“I had been thinking about breast implants for many years, had been searching internet for many weeks and decided to go with the hospital that had the best reviews. From filling out the online form to getting appointment then operation and aftercare I actually found that the experience was better than I imagined”

“Mr Chris Dunkin was my surgeon, he explained everything that was going to happen and what to expect and he was spot on. From start to finish the whole experience has been amazing and the outcome is perfect. It has changed my life. I had no confidence at all and now I can go out and enjoy myself without being self conscious and embarrassed. I would like to thank Mr Chris Dunkin and his team for everything they have done for me”

Brilliant experience, couldn’t be happier!

“Absolutely amazing the whole process was very easy and I was made to feel very relaxed and comfortable during my stay. Over the moon with my new boobs they are the perfect size and have healed nicely, couldn’t be happier! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get this surgery.”

“I had an amazing experience from start to finish with outstanding results”

‘My experience from start to finish was exceptional. I got tret like royalty and had my procedure explained every step of the way. At first I thought that due to me putting myself in the hospital and wanting the cosmetic surgery rather than needing the surgery I would be treat differently. I assumed that the staff would think I was vain and aww me not as a patient. My thoughts and beliefs were the complete opposite. Every member of staff I have dealt with have been friendly, supportive and reassuring”

“I was made to feel at ease the day of my surgery and the aftercare was outstanding. I liked the personal touches of Dr Dunkin visiting me after surgery and also making the time and effort to check in on me during my follow up assessment with the nurse. The whole procedure and importance of me getting it was very personal to me. I am thrilled with the end result and would recommend this procedure carried out by Dr Dunkin and the staff from he Nuffield Hopsital to anyone who is interested in this surgery”

“Very professional and a natural outcome”

“Mr Dunkin performed a Breast Augmentation (enlargement) for me 12 months ago and I have just had my 1 year check up. I was looking for a very very natural result. I have a slim frame and teach fitness classes therefore it was important that the outcome looked and felt as natural as possible and wouldn’t inhibit my movement in any way or my teaching. Mr Dunkin was extremely professional throughout the whole process and listened to my needs and wishes. He helped me make an informed decision about the size of implant and his workmanship when it came to the operation was really wonderful. I am extremely pleased with the outcome, as they really do look natural and I am in proportion. I can wear the same clothes as before – now I have no need for a padded bra or chicken fillets. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you Chris Dunkin”

“325cc round implants high profile”

“On Friday 8th December I had my breast augmentation with Christopher Dunkin at Nuffield Health York. I also had 3 fairly large moles removed (using the shave method) from my back. I had wanted my boobs doing since I was about 14, I researched for around 2 years for the best surgeon and had 3 consultations with Mr Dunkin before going ahead with him. On the day of my surgery I was very calm which was a surprise to me as I am usually a very anxious person. I was visited many times by different nurses, the anaesthetist and Chris himself who thoroughly explained the procedure. I couldn’t decide between 325cc and 350cc and asked him to try both sizes and choose which one looked best. When I woke up from my surgery I felt amazing, I was in no pain at all and didn’t feel sick at all. My surgery was at 9.30am, I got into the recovery ward at about 11am and then I got back into my private room at about 11.45am. I had my blood pressure and heart rate took every 30 mins. I had my lunch and relaxed for a few hours in bed before a nurse came in and asked how I felt, I felt absolutely fine and she told me they were happy to discharge me at 3.30pm if I was comfortable doing so. I went home and rested in bed and kept on top of my pain killers the first night and next 2 days, I took codeine the first 3 nights and paracetamol and ibuprofen regularly through the day. The pain was very minimal and only really affected me when I had to move, it just felt like a torn muscle after going to the gym”
